Welcome to KU-Cambridge Climate makEAThon

You are warmly invited to the KU-Cambridge Climate makEAThon, an exciting innovation event to generate ideas to promote effective actions toward climate crisis through food. This is a fantastic opportunity to share your ideas and expertise, help solve climate crisis, and try out your skills in a unique environment!

[Why?]

• ▶ Climate crisis is today’s most imminent, critical threat to humanity.
• ▶ The Earth is fast approaching the tipping point of global warming due to the unprecedented amount of C02 and Green House Gas (GHG) emission in the atmosphere from human activities
• ▶ Feeding 8 billion people contributes to 26%¹⁾ of the global GHG emission
• ▶ Choosing what you eat means casting votes to the food industry three times a day
• ▶ The food choice is no longer value-neutral
• ▶ Yet, it is not easy to link eating with climate crisis.

Whether it is eating less meat, leaving no food waste or using locally grown natural ingredients, there are myriads of ways that can contribute to climate crisis both in a positive and negative way. In order to steer our impact from negative to positive direction, helping people understand the hidden power they have in their food choice is the first step. How? That what we are inviting you to explore!

[What is MAKEathon?]

MAKEathon is an open innovation competition that brings interested people together, and provides the participants with resources, insights, mentoring and space to generate creative innovation ideas within a short period of timeframe. In doing so, individuals are exposed to fresh perspectives and know-hows from each other, and often come up with great innovations that were not realised at the single individual level. It works like a hackathon, we offer an additional element of physical prototyping to encourage participants to experiment and build their ideas using tangible materials and tools.

[What is the KU-Cambridge Climate makEAThon Challenge?]

Participants will be teamed up and work to

develop a product/ service business solution to help people link climate change impact with their daily food choice

This makEAThon is to develop products or services that help consumers connect their diet with climate crisis. Many movements are coming up such as developing meat substitutes, replacing single-use packaging to, reducing food waste, We look forward to your fresh ideas on how to convey the messages to more consumers effectively!
